Using Art Therapy
Art therapy is a wonderfully effective technique that I use with children ages 5-12. It allows them to communicate with me in an easy style they really enjoy. Through their art, which can include drawing, painting, photos, modeling clay, stamps or stickers, I am able to get a better understanding of a child's stress level and help them handle the fears and anxiety that may be present. I have been trained by Pamela Hayes to effectively utilize art therapy in my practice and I have found that it is a great way to connect with my child clients.

Art for children is fun and nonthreatening. They especially look forward to coming and talking with me when we communicate through art therapy on a regular basis.

Often talking alone does not achieve the clarity that comes from art therapy. Words may overwhelm children and art work helps them sort out their emotions and deal with pain in a way they can understand and cope with more easily.

For children suffering from grief and loss, I use art therapy as a very valuable tool to help me gain insight into the child's recent struggles. As children complete specific art tasks it allows them to begin to heal from their grief in a safe protected environment. A drawing or piece of art is very concrete and separate from the child. The child owns it and takes it home where it can be looked at over and over again providing continuing comfort and healing.

Play Therapy For Children
I also use play therapy with children and pre-adolescents. Play therapy works most effectively when I merge it with
talk therapy.
Play therapy is great for children ages 7-14. A wide range of methods including board games, clay, imaginary play, word games, feeling charts and games that encourage problem solving can be used. By combining play therapy with clinical theory I am able to help a child identify his feelings, enhance his self-esteem and make better choices. Play therapy helps children feel valued and accepted allowing them to share openly and honestly who they are with me.

Relaxation Strategies for Children
Children also benefit from learning relaxation techniques and mindfulness. Relaxation techniques are especially useful when I work with children who have anxiety, fears or depression. The easy, enjoyable methods of relaxation therapy help release tension in their body so they can communicate more easily what is bothering them. I can help them with their dilemmas and situations when they are relaxed and comfortable in my office.
